Sleep

The harder you try to sleep, the more it feels like a test.

When bedtime becomes a performance review, try changing the assignment.

LushClover · 02

Now you’re doing the arithmetic.

If I fall asleep right now, I can still get six hours.

Five and a half.

The bed is quiet. The negotiations are not.

LushClover · 03

Being awake is not a personal failure.

There is no prize for forcing yourself unconscious. A difficult night is a difficult night—not evidence that you are bad at resting.

You can stop treating this moment as a measure of how well you are doing.

Change what bed is for.

NIH describes stimulus control as part of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia: rebuilding the association between bed and sleep.

Its guidance includes going to bed when sleepy and getting out of bed if you cannot sleep.

LushClover · 05

Try a quieter intermission.

If it’s safe and practical, move somewhere comfortable for a calm activity in dim light. Return when you feel sleepy.

Think a familiar book, not an inbox full of tomorrow’s demands.

LushClover · 06

Don’t give the intermission a score.

You don’t have to ask every minute whether the idea is “working.”

The immediate aim is to step out of the struggle. Let the book be a book, rather than another test of whether you can fall asleep.

LushClover · 07

A repeated problem deserves support.

If sleep problems persist or affect your days, talk with a healthcare professional. NIH recommends CBT-I as a usual first treatment for long-term insomnia.

You can ask specifically about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia.

LushClover · 08

Tonight is not an exam.

Choose one gentle change you can actually make.

You can create an opportunity for sleep. You don’t have to command it.
