Relationships

Ask before you carry it

Caring about someone does not tell you which kind of help they want.

LushClover · 02

You have already made a plan

Your partner mentions a difficult meeting. By the time they finish the first sentence, you have drafted an email in your head. You are ready to help; they have barely begun telling you what happened.

LushClover · 03

Check the invitation

Try asking, “Would you like me to listen, help you think, or take something off your plate tonight?” These are different offers. Their answer may be smaller than the rescue you had imagined.

LushClover · 04

Let them keep the steering wheel

If they want ideas, offer one and pause. If they want company, put the plan away. Being close to the problem does not automatically make it yours to manage.

LushClover · 05

Name your own capacity

You might be able to listen for ten minutes but not stay up for hours. Say that warmly and directly. A useful offer is one you can actually keep.

LushClover · 06

Make space for a different answer

Tomorrow they may want something else. Ask again when it matters. You are learning how to be alongside this person, in this situation, rather than becoming an expert on all their needs.
