Emotional patterns

Would you say that to someone you love?

Listen to the voice you use when you make a mistake.

LushClover · 02

You dropped something small.

A deadline. A glass. A detail someone had already told you.

Before you can deal with it, there is a voice telling you exactly what kind of person that makes you.

LushClover · 03

Notice the jump.

“I forgot” became “I’m hopeless.”

The first sentence names something that happened. The second tries to summarize your entire character.

LushClover · 04

Borrow your voice for a friend.

The NHS suggests thinking about what you would say to a friend in a similar situation.

Would you call them hopeless—or help them work out what to do next?

LushClover · 05

Keep the responsibility. Lose the insult.

“I missed the deadline. I need to tell them and agree on a new one.”

You can be honest about the mistake without turning honesty into punishment.

LushClover · 06

Use a sentence you can believe.

You don’t have to call yourself wonderful. Try something fair: “I made a mistake, and I can respond to it.”

Fairness is enough to practice with.

LushClover · 07

Speak to the person who has to repair it.

That person is you.

Give yourself words that help with the next step, rather than words that make it harder to take.

Stay a little longer

Another thought to take with you.

They gave you a compliment. You explained why it didn’t count. ↗If rest waits until everything is done, when does it happen? ↗It’s Sunday evening. Your mind has already gone to work. ↗
