Everyday life

The hobby you can restart badly

Returning to something does not require picking up exactly where you left off.

LushClover · 02

The instrument has gathered dust

You used to play, draw, knit or garden. When you imagine beginning again, you compare the first attempt with your best remembered work. It hardly seems worth opening the cupboard.

LushClover · 03

Start with the materials

Find the pencil, tune the instrument, or check what the plant needs. A return can begin with getting ready. You do not have to produce something immediately to make the time worthwhile.

LushClover · 04

Choose an easy piece

Use a familiar pattern or a smaller task than you once attempted. Let it be a way back into the activity rather than a test of everything you have retained.

LushClover · 05

Allow your interests to have moved

You may prefer a different style or pace now. The old version of the hobby is not a contract. Keep the part that still interests you and change the rest.

LushClover · 06

Leave a welcoming next step

Before putting it away, choose what you could do next time. A few unfinished notes or materials left safely ready can make another visit easier to imagine.

Stay a little longer
