Use the pause to look at your actual time and energy, not the version you wish you had.

Offer what you can really give.

The NHS suggests thinking about the support you feel able to provide and setting boundaries around it.

Your willingness to help does not make your capacity unlimited.

Be specific about the limit.

“I can bring dinner on Tuesday, but I can’t stay for the evening.”

Or simply: “I can’t take that on this week.” You can be warm and clear at the same time.

If you already agreed, speak early.

“I said yes before checking. I’m sorry—I can’t do the whole thing. Here’s what I can do.”

They may be disappointed. A clear answer still lets them make another plan.

Let your yes mean something.

Before the next request, give yourself a moment.

Can you offer this willingly, within the life you actually have? That is a useful place to begin.

Stay a little longer
